I recently had a chance to go back and visit my high school in Cincinnati. I've only been back to Cincinnati four or five times in the last 35 years, and haven't been to the school in at least 15. What an amazing place. While much has changed over the decades, as far as I could tell, it's all for the better.
Every faculty and staff member I met was engaging and energenic. The facilities were all designed to maximize the students' learning experience. And the use of technology and experiential learning was quite impressive. I even ran into some former schoolmates who are now parents of students.
All of the above notwithstanding, the most energizing aspect of my visit was my impression of the character and caliber of the students. Their intellect, inquisitiveness, and interaction with the teachers was inspiring. I know it was only a brief visit, and maybe they were on their best behavior, but I came away from the experience with a sense of pride and hope for the leaders of the future.
